What samples are needed for DNA Testing?

Buccal Swabs

The most commonly used method to acquire a DNA sample is by buccal swab. The swab is placed inside of the mouth and is brushed against the cheek for 30 to 60 seconds. The swabs are placed inside of an envelope and the name of the person is placed on the envelope.

Blood Samples

Another method to collect a DNA sample is done by using blood. Blood DNA sample collections are performed by using specimen blood cards to place all participants’ blood. Oftentimes blood on clothing can be used. It is recommended that you contact our office at 877-680-5800 if you have a blood sample on clothing or a tissue. Both the swab and blood DNA testing options are effective methods that have the same accuracy.

Hair Samples

Using hair follicle samples can be a viable option when collecting a buccal swab from a person is not a possibility. For example, this option is mostly used when there is a deceased relative. Please note, this testing option does not have the same accuracy as the swab or blood sample options and requires a minimum of ten hair follicle samples to be collected.

In addition, Each hair sample must have the root (white spec) at the end of the follicle in order for the lab to use this testing option to possibly produce a result. To learn more please contact our office at 877-680-5800 to learn more about this option.
