Getting a Paternity Test if You Live in New York City
If you want to get a paternity test and you live in New York State, you need to do the following before you can schedule an appointment:
- Get a court order from a Family Court judge requesting a paternity test.
- Ask your regular doctor, who must be licensed in New York, to write you a prescription for a “DNA genetic test” or “paternity test.” The prescription must have your name on it and say “please release results to [your name].”
- If you can’t do #1 or #2, talk to a family lawyer or immigration lawyer. Ask them to write you a letter asking for a paternity test.
There is one other way you can get a paternity test, maternity test, or sibling DNA test in New York:
