What is U.S. Passport DNA Testing?
U.S. passport DNA testing may be suggested when a U.S. Passport Agency requests secondary evidence to help establish a claimed biological relationship between a parent and child. In some passport cases, applicants may be asked to submit additional supporting evidence such as hospital records, medical records, religious records, insurance records, vaccination records, or immigration DNA test results when the primary evidence provided is considered insufficient.
When the listed documents are unavailable to adequately establish the claimed biological relationship, DNA testing may serve as highly accurate secondary evidence to help support a U.S. passport approval.

How accurate is immigration DNA testing?
All DNA samples are collected and analyzed by our partner AABB-accredited laboratory in accordance with strict industry guidelines and chain-of-custody protocols required for immigration DNA testing.
DNA test results showing a probability of paternity or maternity of 99.99% or higher are considered highly accurate and are commonly accepted by USCIS, U.S. embassies, and U.S. consular offices as secondary evidence to help establish a claimed biological relationship for immigration and CRBA cases.
What is the preferred specimen collection will occur at my appointment?
The standard method of DNA sample collection is by cheek swab. The cheek swab is brushed firmly against the inside of both cheeks for 30 to 60 seconds to collect cheek (epithelial) cells.
A blood sample collection is a viable testing option that has the same accuracy a buccal cheek swab samples.
What happens if I am given a deadline to respond?
Most U.S. Passport Agency requests for secondary evidence include a deadline to respond. For this reason, it is important to contact IDTO DNA immediately after receiving the request so the passport DNA testing process can begin as quickly as possible and your family has the opportunity to meet the requested response timeframe.
For international U.S. passport DNA testing cases, the beneficiary’s DNA sample collection appointment must be coordinated through the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate abroad. Because embassy and consular workloads vary from country to country, the scheduling process may take several weeks or, in some situations, several months.
Please keep in mind that once the DNA collection kit request arrives at the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate, consular officials are generally aware that your family has initiated the passport DNA testing process. In many cases, this may be taken into consideration while your case remains pending.
If your family member is scheduled for a passport or Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) interview before the overseas DNA sample collection appointment has been completed, it is generally recommended that you communicate directly with the embassy or consular official handling your case.
Providing the FedEx tracking information confirming delivery of the DNA collection kit to the embassy or consulate may also help demonstrate that the DNA testing process has already been initiated and that your family is currently waiting for appointment scheduling.
